U.S. Spanish-American War Era Army Model 1880 Hunting Knife with Leather SheathThis is an original
U.S. Spanish-American War Era Army Model 1880 Hunting Knife with Leather Sheath in nice untouched condition.
These knives were developed during the same period of American "multi-use" military experimentation that produced the Springfield Trapdoor ramrod and trowel bayonets, the Springfield Model 1880 "Hunting Knife" was quite similar in size and appearance to the entrenching tool developed in the same year. The handle and bolster design is very similar, though it is fitted with brass, and not steel.
The knife measures 13-1/2 inches overall, with an 8-1/2 inch long and 2 inch wide blade. This is fitted with a brass hilt, which surrounds the bottom of the blade, and holds it in place with two rivets. One is ground flat, while the other was left domed, which is correct, as it locks into the throat of the sheath. The brass portion is marked with U.S. / SPRINGFIELD on one side, and with serial number 1887 on the other. The ribbed grip is unmarked, as is the brass fit leather scabbard.
This example is in very good condition, showing very little oxidation and staining on the blade, with no dings on the wood handle. The blade was never sharpened and there are no edge dents or nicks.
The brass fitting for the handle has a lovely aged patina. The sheath is in good shape.
