    This bead features the Helm of Awe, Ægishjálmr in Old Norse, on a Viking shield which was used to strike fear in the hearts of the enemy. This pendant is identical on both sides, however, one side is flat and the other side is slightly domed like that of a shield.
    The following is from the Poetic Edda in the book of Fáfnismál where Fafnir declares his strength and power from using the Helm of Awe.
